The Truth Behind the Industry Challenges

The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry is experiencing a period of significant transformation and uncertainty. While some might quickly declare a market slowdown, the reality is far more nuanced and complex.

The HVAC industry is essential to the daily lives of homeowners and businesses alike. As demand and trends shift, it’s vital to separate fact from fiction to understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The Current Landscape: Challenges Facing HVAC Businesses

Small to medium-sized businesses are currently navigating a perfect storm of challenges:

1. Economic Uncertainties
Recent economic pressures have created a challenging business environment. Inflation, rising material costs, and reduced consumer spending are squeezing profit margins for many contractors.

2. Skilled Labour Shortages
The industry continues to grapple with a significant skills gap. Fewer young professionals are entering the trade, creating recruitment challenges for smaller businesses.

3. Technological Disruption
Rapid technological advances in green technologies and smart home systems are forcing businesses to continuously adapt and invest in new skills and equipment.

A Look at the Data

While rumours of a market slowdown circulate throughout Europe, the numbers in the UK tell a different story.

1. Heat Pump Installation (Consumer Searches):
Across Europe, there has been a slowdown. According to the European Heat Pump Association, heat pump sales fell by 47% in the first six months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. Just 765,000 were sold in 13 European countries this year, compared to 1.44 million in the first half of last year.

On the other hand, the UK has seen a surge in heat pump installations, with a 45% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. Over 30,000 certified heat pumps were installed between January and July 2024, driven by government incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which provides grants of up to £7,500. The government aims for 600,000 annual installations by 2028; and although I won’t go into the debate here about why this is a tall order, it is clear that heat pump installation in the UK is on the rise.

2. Domestic and Commercial Heating Searches:
Air-source heat pumps are particularly popular, with over 21,000 installations recorded in the first five months of 2024. This represents a 54% increase over the same period in 2023.

In Europe, air source heat pumps cost around £10,000 to buy and install, but with the government grant in the UK, this is becoming a more accessible option for UK consumers.

3. Boiler Upgrade Scheme:
Initiated by the previous Conservative Government, as aforementioned, the BUS provides homes with grants of up to £7,500 towards the upfront cost of a heat pump. The maximum grant was increased last year from £5,000 and the overall budget for the scheme quadrupled to almost £2bn.

Applications for the BUS increased by 73% in the first half of 2024, reflecting strong consumer interest in sustainable heating systems. This program is pivotal in making heat pump adoption accessible.

It should be noted that other European countries, like Italy and Sweden, also offer tax credits or incentives for energy-efficient upgrades.

4. Gas and Traditional Heating:
Throughout Europe, gas is the primary energy source for 32.1% of households. According to the 2021 Census, 73.8% of households in England and Wales use mains gas as their primary central heating source. Although this has decreased in recent years, gas heating remains common, which comes as no surprise as gas prices have become cheaper compared to electricity, which is often heavily taxed. However, with decarbonisation efforts intensifying, the shift to alternatives like heat pumps is being supported through policy and consumer awareness campaigns.

5. Air Conditioning in the UK:
While air conditioning is less emphasised in the available data, it is part of the broader push towards energy-efficient HVAC solutions, with growing interest in integrating systems with renewable energy technologies.

Myth vs. Reality: Debunking Market Slowdown Narratives

Despite positive growth projections, myths about an HVAC slowdown are common, especially among smaller businesses. Let’s clear up a few misconceptions with data-backed insights:

1. Myth: Demand is declining due to economic uncertainty.

Reality: Economic uncertainty can impact any industry, but HVAC services—especially emergency repairs and replacements—remain necessary. Research shows that demand for HVAC upgrades is increasing as homeowners prioritise sustainable heating and cooling solutions to lower utility costs.

The UK HVAC market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.36% to 7.5% between 2023 and 2033. The market, valued at £4.5 billion in 2023, is expected to nearly double to £9.6 billion by 2033, driven by increasing demand for energy-efficient and sustainable solutions, urbanisation, and government initiatives promoting renewable heating technologies. This indicates robust growth potential, not decline.

2. Myth: Only large companies can compete in this market.

Reality: Small businesses are in a strong position to thrive by targeting niche markets and local clientele. According to a recent industry report, 68% of customers prefer local, specialised contractors over large national chains. Businesses with optimised Google My Business (GMB) profiles and strong online reviews also see higher rankings in local search results. Therefore, local SEO and tailored digital marketing help smaller HVAC providers reach customers in their area, levelling the playing field with larger companies.

3. Myth: Digital marketing won’t make a difference for HVAC companies.

Reality: A strong digital presence is critical for growth in today’s market. Businesses that use multi-channel digital marketing campaigns see better engagement and higher ROI.
