What Net Zero Means for Your Website

Why Your Online Presence Needs to Evolve with the Green Transition

The UK’s Net Zero goals are reshaping the building services sector, from the boilers you install to the systems you specify.

Carbon-cutting technology is everywhere now. At this year's InstallerShow, everything was about sustainability, from heat pumps to solar, and retrofitting.

But there’s one area most HVAC, renewables, and building services companies overlook in the transition: their website.

Your website’s carbon emissions might not quite match a gas boiler, but it is often the first place customers go when choosing between you and a competitor. And if it doesn’t reflect your commitment to low-carbon solutions, you could be missing out on leads, trust, and contracts.

Many plumbers still have photos of gas boilers on their homepage. This is understandable, as over 85% of homes in the UK still rely on gas. But there is an opportunity to stand out by walking and talking green.

Customers Are Searching Differently Now

Terms like “eco-friendly heating installer”, “green electrician near me”, or “MCS-certified heat pump installer” are on the rise as education on green tech grows.

People aren’t just looking for the cheapest option anymore; they look for companies that align with their values and meet funding criteria.

If your website doesn’t include the words, phrases, or certifications people are using in search… Google won’t show your business.

The same is true for training. More installers are looking for renewable energy courses, like heat pump or solar training. With government initiatives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme helping to fund training, the trickle-down effect is very real. It is then down to installers to be confident in the technology and promote it.

And this is where your website can help!

What Net Zero Signals Should Your Website Include?

Here are a few simple but powerful additions you can make to help your website work for your Net Zero positioning:

1. Certifications and Accreditations

List relevant badges:

  • MCS

  • TrustMark

  • RECC

  • PAS 2035

These help customers (and search engines) identify you as a trusted low-carbon provider.

2. Carbon-Conscious Messaging

People want to feel like they are doing their bit. Don’t be afraid to explain how your products or installations reduce carbon emissions. Use plain language.

Instead of “We fit Vaillant boilers,” say:

“We install energy-efficient systems designed to cut your carbon footprint and your energy bills.”

3. Green Services Front and Centre

Don’t bury renewables or energy-saving upgrades in your site menu. Create dedicated pages and explain:

  • What they are

  • Who are they for

  • How do they reduce emissions/save money

Consider updating your images, avoiding stock photos if possible. Include up-to-date photography of the products you fit.

4. Case Studies with an Environmental Angle

Nothing builds trust like proof. Share a job where a customer switched from a G-rated boiler to a heat pump and slashed emissions.

Heat pumps have received a bad reputation because of poor installation. If you have happy heat pump customers, get reviews, quotes, photos, stats, and even videos.

5. FAQs That Address Sustainability

Answer common queries like:

  • “Is a heat pump right for my home?”

  • “What’s the payback time on solar PV?”

This builds credibility and SEO value.

Your Website’s Carbon Footprint (Yes, It Has One)

Did you know your website uses energy every time someone visits it?

A fast, well-optimised site not only ranks better in Google, but it also uses less electricity, especially if it’s hosted on a green provider. We use Cloudflare, which is committed to using 100% renewable energy for its global network.

Simple steps like compressing images, removing unused code, and using modern hosting reduce the carbon cost of every visit.

Even things like making sure your users can find what they are looking for means less carbon is released.

Net Zero Helps You Stand Out Locally

Most trades and HVAC firms still lead with “competitive pricing” and “fast response.” Few are confidently talking about sustainability.

This is your opportunity.

If someone in your town is searching for:

  • “Heat pump installer in Reading”

  • “Low-carbon heating Bristol”

  • “MCS-certified renewable engineer near me”

…and your site is the only one that talks their language? You win the click. You win the trust. You win the job.

Jonny's advice

Avoid green-washing. Authenticity is the key, use your knowledge and experience rather than trying to copy what others are saying. Anything half-baked will stand out like a sore thumb.
